Yes, Axe spikes slightly better, and does a higher average damage including crits. Sword however offers more utility, in that you have have a decent sword attack chain without having to use an elite. This opens you up for "Charge!", Bull's Charge... etc. This is why top guilds use all three types, they are balanced well.
Good day to you, sir.

Your interpretation skill is unbelievable. If the sword skills are balanced to the axe ones, will you see all those Axe-warrior (with a Bulwark) in GvG? The presence of Axe-warrior and Sword-warrior in GvG is totally unbalanced, simply for how 99% people think axe is better. If it is not better in PvP, why do you use it? Oh, you love the look.
You mean Anet makes Axe skills better because they want you to make a choice whether you should give up your Weapon-Mastery Elite skill for a Tactic skill (which can be used by ALL weapons-users)????
As for the "utility" to be unleashed by the almighty "Charge!" skill, I really appreciate how you value "Charge" while all the almighty axe-warriors don't/can't equip it. While 99% shield-wielding warriors in GvG use an axe, I can't see how "Charge" contribute in the current GvG tournament.
So you mean a sword-warrior should be a supportive role to simply keep shouting "Charge!" beside your slow-moving casters, right? Maybe more guilds should force their warriors to change to sword and equip the Charge elite skill.
Please tell me you are not using an Axe with a Bulwark.
Thanks for your humor, sir.
